ACTON  BRIDGE  W I
REPORT OF MAY MEETING, 2008

In May, Acton Bridge WI once again combined a sociable Faith Supper with the serious discussion of the Resolutions planned to be put to the AGM in June. The President, Sue Williams, had opened the evening with a welcome to all members, who were asked to sign up for a number of upcoming events, including a tour of Fryers Rose Nursery on the evening of June 30th and a guided outing "From Cathedral to Cathedral" in Liverpool on August 2nd. This is open to the first 25 members, including their friends and families, to apply. She commented on how much members had enjoyed their guided tour of the hidden treasures of Tatton's house and gardens, which had taken place on a beautiful spring day at the start of the month thanks to the support of the Group's bursary. One member had been overheard saying "I thought I was in Paradise!"

After a generous and sociable supper, the members looked at the information available on the two resolutions planned to go before the AGM. Once again they were extremely topical. Members heartily supported the resolution encouraging the EU to ban bottom trawling, but wanted greater clarity in the wording, to make clear the aspects of the process which cause the damage to marine life. There was great concern voiced over how any measure might be effectively and consistently enforced. The motion for the treatment of the severely mentally ill in more appropriate surroundings than prison was also well supported. Several members also commented on the need to improve care of the mentally ill generally.

The next WI meeting will be on Tuesday June 10th, when the speaker will be Tim Kirwin of the Woodland Trust, talking about the Hazel Pear and other local woods.
